Policy Advice

As the national peak body for women’s specialist domestic and family violence services, the breadth of Wesnet’s membership is one of its key strengths. It enables us to draw from and harness a rich seam of experience and expertise to provide advice to government and other organisations on a range of issues that impact our members and, more generally, women, non-binary, and gender diverse people.

Our evidence-based policy advice and advocacy is driven by the dual goals of:

  • 1. progressing gender equality to reduce violence against women and their children, and

  • 2. promoting specialist women’s services as the most effective way of providing services to victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.

Our work is underpinned by our commitment to work in solidarity with First Nations women, and our recognition that women can face multiple forms of systemic and structural disadvantage and inequality based on grounds including race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexuality and gender identity.

WESNET is an active member of the Australian Women Against Violence Alliance (AWAVA), working together to provide leadership and advocacy at the national level in relation to all aspects of violence against women and girls. Past AWAVA submissions can be found here.
