Aims and Objectives: 

This one-off grants program was funded in mid 2008. The overall objective of the project was to build the capacity of organisations to support victims of domestic or family violence through early intervention and prevention approaches.

The project aimed to:

  • harness the practice knowledge and experience of the domestic and family violence sector and support them to carry out and/or document innovative and creative ideas for early intervention and prevention activities;
  • support other community-based organisations to identify opportunities and measures to undertake strategic intervention within an early intervention/preventative framework;
  • build community capacity to reject and respond to domestic and family violence;
  • focus on prevention and early intervention with at-risk communities and populations, reducing risk, building resilience and protective factors, and building capacity of communities to address and solve their problems; and
  • foster collaboration between local agencies in the prevention of domestic and family violence, including through mentoring, protocol development, and cross-sector training opportunities. The agencies could include but are not limited to; refuges and shelters and other domestic and family violence services, Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP) services, police, the legal system, health workers, child protection, education, childcare workers, and others.
Description: 

WESNET allocated $500,000 in funding grants to 22 projects across Australia in mid 2008 to trial and test innovative approaches to prevention and early intervention in domestic and family violence.
